Dracula: Origin (PC Game)

Description:

Dracula: Origin is the exciting new adventure game from Frogwares studio, the developers of the popular Sherlock Holmes series on PC.

Having stylishly blended H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythology with Sherlock Holmes in Sherlock Holmes - The Awakened, Frogwares is once again venturing into a disturbing and fantastic universe, the world of the Prince of Darkness, a world full of Gothic adventure, romance, mystery and terror.

Dracula: Origin reveals the origins of the Dracula curse. Once the ardent defender of Christendom, Dracula loses his faith in God when he is abandoned by his one true love after she marries. Dracula then makes a pact with the Prince of Darkness, and becomes a vampire.

As time goes by, Dracula discovers the existence of a manuscript that allegedly details a rite which brings damned souls back from the beyond. On the body of one of his last victims, Dracula finds the photograph of a pretty young woman, Mina, who looks so disconcertingly like his beloved one; he determines that her body would be the perfect host for the damned soul of the woman he worshipped.

In Dracula: Origin, the player takes the role of the famous Professor Van Helsing whose life’s aim is the destruction of Dracula. Van Helsing must stop the vampire from finding the manuscript. A rich adventure that takes him from London to Egypt, Austria and through Carpathian Europe right into the terrifying home of the Dark Prince.

Mysteries, enigmas, love, thrills and vampires…. Dracula: Origin offers an adventure that advances the genre in leaps and bounds with superb graphics and a solid story line. Made up of a subtle graphic mix of detailed 2D scenery and full 3D characters with a powerful sound track, the game brings to life the imaginary world of the original literary work by Bram Stoker. This new adventure game makes full use of the traditional vampire stories (horror, love, blood, crucifixes, stakes, garlic...) and the genre’s terrifying, Gothic, romantic and fantastic atmosphere.

Clive Barker's Undying (PC Game)

Description:

There always was a curse upon the Covenant family which killed them all either with a painful disease or drove them into madness. At the end of the 19th century the father of the current generation of Covenants reopens their old but abandoned mansion and thereby uncovers strange standing stones on an nearby island. Possessed by this discovery, he locked himself up in the library and wanted to uncover the meaning of those stones.
Out of curiosity, in 1899 his three sons and two daughters stole a book about the stones out of his library, went to the island and conducted a dark and powerful ritual which marked the beginning of the end. During the following 20 years almost every member of the family either turned mad and killed themselves or died from something else.

Now it is the year 1923 and the very last member of the family, Jeremiah Covenant, lies on his deathbed with cancer in his body but he is not alone in his house. The spirits of his brothers and sisters haunt the house, strange events happen and evil creatures stroll through the mansion. In a final attempt to not only lift the family curse but also to put his fellow ancestors to rest, he calls upon Patrick Galloway. Patrick was part of his squad in the first great war and after a fierce battle against creatures, they had never seen before, he had specialised in abolishing such powers from the earth.

You take control over Patrick and walk around like in every other first person-shooter through the several locations of the game ranging from the mansion itself over other earthly locations to Oneiros and Eternal autumn, which are other plains of existence. On your way you uncover the mysteries of the family by reading books and papers which lie around the mansion or by talking to the few people still alive on the island.

Also reading might help you understand what is happening here, it won't help you survive against all the strange creatures that hide in the shadows and attack you without asking. It's also impossible to defeat the ancestral spirits without some serious firepower, so besides your trusty revolver, you'll also find several other weapons during the course of the game like Molotov cocktails, your lovely shotgun or a freeze gun shaped like a dragon head. Since you are fighting the paranormal, you also have access to several spells which allow you to see enemies before they see you, revive the dead or shoot Ectoplasm. Since you hold all your weapons in the left hand and you cast your spells with the right hand, it is possible to use both at any time.

As the name suggests, Clive Barker, the maker of the Hellraiser movies, had great influence in the making of the whole game. He also wrote the background story.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein (PC Game)

Description:

It's been nearly a decade since Wolfenstein 3-D began the first-person shooter genre and at long last everyone's favourite Nazi basher, B J Blazkowicz, is back in Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

Set during World War II, Return to Castle Wolfenstein finds the Nazis dabbling in the black arts in an effort to raise a demonic prince from the dead and create an army of uber soldats.
Naturally, Blazkowicz is the only thing that can stop this supernatural onslaught, so he's set behind enemy lines in an effort to stop Himmler and his evil lieutenant Deaths Head.

On the surface, the single-player game seems like pure gold--after all, everyone loves blowing away Nazis. The graphics look great and the catacomb levels are non-stop action as the armies of the undead are intent on sucking your brains out and serving them up on a nice bit of Melba toast. But it’s not the longest game in the world and in the end does fall a little short of the standards set by titles such as Half-Life and Max Payne.

In fact, the best thing about Return to Castle Wolfenstein is its team-based multiplayer mode. Each multiplayer adventure features Axis vs. Allies and both sides offer four character classes: engineer (removes obstacles), medic (heals and revives team-mates), lieutenant (calls in air strikes and replenishes ammo) and soldier (only class able to use sniper rifles, flamethrowers and other unusual weapons). The game includes only eight multiplayer maps, but they are all perfectly designed, and in order to be successful teams have to work together. The result is a great gaming experience that fans of Counter-Strike or the Day of Defeat mode for Half-Life will really appreciate.

Graphically, Return to Castle Wolfenstein looks amazing. It uses the powerful Quake III engine to great effect and the character models, explosions and lighting effects are all perfectly done. --Jason Trebegger

DOOM II: Hell on Earth (PC Game)

Description:

In this sequel to the original Doom, you play the same hero - the last remaining space marine. After having single-handedly saved a remote planet from demonic threat, you return to Earth, only to find out that the demons have already invaded it, killed all its inhabitants or turned them into demons. It's your task to kill all the demons and to save the Earth.

"Doom II" looks and plays very similarly to its predecessor, utilizing the same 3D graphical engine with 2D sprites for enemies. The gameplay once again consists entirely of navigating the hero from first-person view through 3D environments and shooting at the demons. You have the same weapons as in the first "Doom", plus a new one. There are also some new demons in this sequel.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Redemption (PC Game)

Description:

Based on the bestselling role-playing game of the same name, the game starts in the 12th Century. You play Christof, a French crusader, already fallen from grace for loving a nun. He encounters and kills one vampire, and is then enslaved by a rival clan for their own ends, but through the centuries and the course of the game, he seeks only the woman he loved and his own humanity, more than the glory of waging war for his clan.
The gamplay is based around the use of spells, which are grouped into Disciplines. Each has five levels varying in cost--with blood doubling as currency and life energy. Biting humans causes greater risk of interception, but there are also vials or even your fellow comrades to feed in case of emergencies. However, this can upset team health and combative strength. Resource management is one of the more compelling aspects of the game, supplementing the spell-casting. The game is rapidly addictive, spurring the gamer on to see how the tale unfolds. Vampire's manual is well written, and the ever-present cut scenes enhance rather than intrude. Vampire autosaves at new level openings, into a single slot. This forces the player to play with tactical care and stealth. It does, however, take a mammoth 1.25 gigabytes of disk space for full installation, and the switch to the presend-day section after spending so long in medieval times can be jarring. There is blood--but it's hard to imagine a Vampire game without it. Just make sure you have plenty of time on your hands when you sit down to play. --Kenneth Henry

American McGee's Alice (PC Game)

Description:
American McGee is best known for his work on shooters like Quake III, but he split off from id Software recently and his first effort is Alice, a twisted romp through his own version of Lewis Carroll's Wonderland. The trick is that Alice, now older, is the lone survivor of a house fire that kills her family. She's stuck in an asylum and must regain her own sanity by returning to the madcap Wonderland she visited as a child. She's a darker person now, and, perhaps consequently, Wonderland is correspondingly dark.

The Queen of Hearts cruelly rules the land, the White Rabbit is tattered, the Cheshire Cat sports a pirate earring and a mangy, emaciated look, and the Mad Hatter is even madder than before. Alice, armed with her characteristic politeness, athletic ability, and a large knife, must venture through this dark Wonderland righting wrongs while thwarting the Queen and her army of playing-card guards.

The game itself uses an over-the-shoulder perspective and has Alice running, jumping, and swinging from ropes like a younger and primmer Lara Croft. Controls are easy to use and aside from difficult jumping puzzles and an odd problem where Alice slides on surfaces, the game is easy to play. Wonderland here is dark, like a Tim Burton film, but still easily recognizable to fans of the classic novel. If anything the game is woefully linear--there's only one path and therefore no need to replay the game after you've finished it. The result is a game that feels more constrained and conservative than its source material should have allowed, but the atmosphere makes for an exciting action-adventure nonetheless. Mature subject matter is strewn throughout, so always remember that this isn't an E-ticket Disney ride. --Bob Andrews

Pros: Gorgeous, wicked graphics Excellent use of Carroll's famous characters Cons: High system requirements Very linear

Lewis Carroll's 19th-century fantasy has been reinvented many times, most famously by Walt Disney. And now American McGee, one of the designers behind the Quake and Doom series, issues his addition to the Looking Glass legends with American McGee's Alice. Players take on the role of a wiser, more industrious heroine who sets out in this third-person 3-D action game to free Wonderland from the tyranny of the Queen of Hearts. Alice will confront a host of weird creatures in surreal settings and solve numerous puzzles through more than 15 levels of gameplay.

System Shock 2 (PC Game)

Description:
System Shock 2 is a first-person action-adventure/role-playing video game, designed by Ken Levine for Windows. The title is a sequel to the 1994 PC game System Shock, and was co-developed by Irrational Games and Looking Glass Studios. The sequel was originally designed as a standalone title with no relation to System Shock; story changes were made when Electronic Arts—who owned the Shock franchise rights—signed on as publisher.
System Shock 2 was released on August 11, 1999 in North America.

The game takes place on board a starship in a cyberpunk depiction of 2114. The player assumes the role of a lone soldier trying to stem the outbreak of a genetic infection that has devastated the ship. Like System Shock, gameplay consists of first person shooting and exploration. The game also incorporates elements of role-playing system elements, where player allows to develop unique skills and traits, such as hacking and psionic abilities.

System Shock 2 received positive reviews when released, but failed to meet commercial sales expectations. In retrospect, many critics have determined the game to be highly influential, particularly on first person shooters, and far ahead of its time, and inducted it into several "greatest games of all time" lists. In January 2006, Computer and Video Games reported System Shock 3 may be under development. As of January 2009, nothing conclusive has surfaced regarding the purported project's status. In 2007, Irrational—then 2K Boston/2K Australia—released a self-proclaimed 'spiritual successor' to the System Shock series, entitled BioShock, to critical acclaim and strong sales.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines (PC Game)

Description: You wake up one morning and discover that you are dead. Well, not exactly dead, but turned into a vampire - "sired", as the vampires themselves call it. Before you are able to reflect upon your new existence, you are taken to a court room, where you get acquainted with Camarilla - an organization that maintains order among vampires. Apparently, your sire turned you into a vampire without permission, so Prince LaCroix, the head of Los Angeles Camarilla branch, decides to execute both of you.
Your short vampire life would have come to an abrupt end, if a mysterious person hadn't stepped in and convinced the Prince to spare it. The Prince takes responsibility for you from now on, and decides to test your abilities, sending you to Santa Monica. Before long you become involved in a net of intrigues between powerful organizations and vampire clans, and have to choose your own place in this terrifying new world.

The game is based on the pen-and-paper RPG Vampire: The Masquerade. In the beginning, you create your character, choosing between vampire clans, each one with its own unique abilities. You receive many quests during your adventure, and gain experience points for completing them. Those experience points can be spent to raise parameters of your characters, as well as various vampire feats. You can make your character stronger in combat, proficient in computer hacking or stealth, more powerful in vampire disciplines, more attractive, more intimidating, and so on.

Many quests can be completed in different ways, and it will also be possible to choose with whom you want to side during the game. The combat is action-based. You can fight unarmed, use melee weapons, or guns. Melee combat is viewed from third-person perspective, but you switch to first-person if you are using a gun. Blood is used to activate your vampire disciplines. You can feed on humans; but there are two things you should watch for. First, if you do it openly, you violate the rules of Masquerade, which dictates all vampires to conceal their true nature. Five Masquerade violations lead to instant Game Over. And second, if you kill an innocent human in process, you'll not only be chased by policemen, but also lose a point of your humanity, which will raise your chances of becoming an uncontrolled beast.

DOOM 3 (PC Game)

Description: The long awaited release of Doom 3 sees it claiming two of gaming's highest accolades: that of having the best graphics ever seen and of being the scariest video game ever made. The question of graphics seemed a pretty open and shut case from the moment the game was announced--this is the first new title from legendary developers iD Software since Quake III: Arena and as such it features completely new graphics technology.

The reason the game is likely to win the Dr Who award for behind the sofa gaming is in the way it chooses to use its awesome new graphical power. The game's storyline is a loose remake of the first Doom game (from way back in 1993) but the style of gameplay is actually radically different. This is more like a first person Resident Evil than anything else, with corpses lunging out at when you least expect it and monsters scattering their innards all over the place whenever you introduce them to the business end of your shotgun.

In actual fact though it's not the graphics that are the most disturbing aspect of the game but the sound, with every unknown noise ratcheting the tension up so much that by the time a monster actually does appear it's almost a relief to tangle with them. Doom 3 is not for the faint hearted and that's not a warning to be taken lightly--anyone keen on wearing oversized women's shirts will have a coronary within minutes. But for everyone else this is exactly what the doctor ordered. --David Jenkins

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (PC Game)

The Zelda series is one that gets a whole lot of flak for being derivative and formulaic, some detractors going as far as saying Nintendo just releases the same game every few years with a different subtitle.  Judging from the relative unpopularity of Majora’s Mask, however, it seems that many fans might be more hesitant about change than they seem.  This is because though its dungeon crawling follows the same basic pattern (find weapon, use weapon to kill boss), Majora’s Mask is perhaps the most unique variation on a Zelda game in the 3D era.

The first distinct element that separates MM from the herd is its use of time.  Where Ocarina of Time had a basic night-and-day system, MM has fully developed days on which different things occur.  The entire game takes place over the course of 3 days, in fact, which you must replay over and over again with your time-traveling flute in order to prevent the apocalypse which happens at the end of the third night.  This conceit allowed the developers to create a more fully realized world in which plot lines develop between NPCs over the course of time, and interesting puzzles arise as you try to figure out when and where you need to be to meet up with a certain person, for instance.  This mechanic even extends into the dungeons – 3 game days may seem like a long time, but combined with the four massive temples of MM it leads to some fairly strict time limits.
Plot wise, this apocalyptic story is one of the darker tales told by a Zelda game, though much of this element is unspoken*.  Spend three days reuniting two estranged lovers, for instance, and you’re rewarded with a scene of them silently embracing as the moon creeps inexorably forward to destroy the town.  There is also a strange sense of futility you get from helping people out only to have to go back in time and effectively undo your good deeds.  Oh, and solving everybody’s problems in a single 3 day period?  Impossible.  You may be the Hero of Time, but you can’t be everywhere at once – an unusually frank statement on the nature of heroism from a series that’s usually black-and-white with the term.  Oh, and collect every mask in the game and you’re given the Fierce Diety’s mask, an item supposedly more powerful and evil than the one you’re supposed to be ridding the world of.  Not every day Link resorts to fighting fire with fire.

Speaking of masks, though, this is the other big unique element of the game – masks that transform you into a member of one of the other Hyrulian races.  Though you’re still “Link,” this is the first time in a Zelda game you aren’t exclusively playing as a sword-wielding fellow in a green tunic.  You can switch between human, deku scrub, goron, and zora, and each has its own skill set and weaknesses, used to solve puzzles, travel to new areas, and even fight bosses.  Having a unique instrument to each race is a cool bonus, but I do wish it had been implemented a bit more.  Beyond these transformative masks, though, you can also find a wide variety of lesser masks which do all sorts of minor things when equipped, from making you run faster to letting you talk to frogs or read people’s thoughts.  It adds a fair bit of depth to the gameplay through the sheer amount of variety it affords you, and it also stimulates the collectionist part of your brain (speaking of collectionism, there are also incidental items you can choose to collect in each dungeons for various rewards – it’s a nice additional challenge and adds some replay value to the levels, something I would like to see more Zelda games do).
As with any experiment, though, the game is a bit hit or miss.  What it does well it knocks out of the park, but it falters in a few areas – most notably some uninspired boss fights.  Though the second dungeon and boss are both great, but the others simply fail to be memorable – they’re done competently enough, but we’ve come to expect a bit more from a Zelda game.  The game is also a bit on the short side with only four dungeons (though they are larger than the norm), and as the trade-off for the cool masks you end up with a smaller repertoire of tools.  Because of this, I can see why people may have been upset with this quirky successor to one of the most celebrated titles of all time, but for what it’s worth I think it stands on its own as a pretty great game.  Just a bit different.

Kirby's Epic Yarn (Wii Game)

Countless games promise the world and then inevitably fail to deliver the goods. We’re constantly told some game will have the “biggest open world” or “hundreds of hours of gameplay,” but how often do you feel like your expectations were fully met? A delightful exception, Epic Yarn comes through on every claim it’s made over the past few months, offering a memorable 2D platforming experience that ranks right up there with the greatest Nintendo titles of the past.
Obviously Epic Yarn’s aspirations are lower than the next big FPS or MMO, but that doesn’t change the fact developer Good Feel gave us precisely what it advertised, plus laid on the charm so thick it’s forced a smile on every GamesRadar editor’s face during the review process. Epic Yarn is the happy-faced antidote to the M-rated, gun-toting glut we’re currently drowning in.

Above: Adorabacalypse

Kirby’s always been Nintendo’s cutest character, but in a focus-tested, manufactured kind of way. His rotund puffball stature was designed for maximum effect - Epic Yarn, on the other hand, is aesthetically inspired and works for every single “d’awww” it gets. Any given moment of the game is laced with convincing storybook-like fabrics that both look amazing and function as an interactive part of the level. Pieces will flap in the breeze, unzip and tumble to the ground, or, in a particularly cool effect, crinkle up as you yank chunks of the world around with your stringy whip weapon. And would you believe each of these themed levels (which come in lava, ice, tropical and techno-space flavors) all look and behave differently? How amazing is it that a game in which you learn no additional moves can remain fresh, vibrant and compelling the entire time you play? You just run, jump, swing and lasso stuff from beginning to end and it’s effing magical the whole time.

Above: Kirby doesn’t consume enemies and steal powers this time - he morphs along with the world, changing shape nearly every time he engages in a different action

The unique properties don’t stop there - would you believe it’s impossible to die in Epic Yarn? It’s true, there are no lives and there is no way to actually see a Game Over screen. Now before the hardcore maniacs (that would include us, btw) raise their hands in protest, understand what the game is trying to do. The goal of each level is to make it to the end with as many beads (think Mario coins) as possible, plus the three hidden treasures tucked away in various crannies. If you’re hit, you lose some beads. Fall in a pit, you’re gonna lose a crapload of beads. But you’ll never die, never have to re-start the level or dread having to play some specific part again. You simply move on and keep enjoying the visual splendor at work.

Player two can hop in at any point on the world map and control Prince Fluff, Kirby’s azure counterpart in Epic Yarn. Both control the same, and can snag and toss each other to higher ground - a key strategy when trying to collect all the game’s treasure. We mostly played the game solo, but found the co-op mode to be just as fun, and in some cases a noticeably different experience. Certainly not a clustershart like the four-player mode in New Super Mario Bros.

Above: On the left is Kirby’s mech in solo, the right is the co-op version. Note the extra fist and lovely crown on the right version - that’s added functionality AND presentation!

So if you want to play with your kids, or want to wean someone (parents, non-gamey significant others etc) off the casual crap they’ve been playing on Wii, this is the game to use. Two player co-op with no death, arresting graphics and a slight competitive edge (who can get the most beads?) should be enough to make anyone forget the piles of $20 shovelware suffocating the aisles. Conversely, the emphasis on performance makes Epic Yarn not about avoiding death, but avoiding being hit at all - how’s that for a hardcore angle?

Above: But don’t think for a second that every level is cakewalk

If you’re really dedicated, you can try to earn a high rank on each boss, which opens up additional, harder levels in each world. Again, if you’re playing for pure fun, you can run through the main levels in about five hours and have a great time; if high scores and challenge are on your mind, go for the medals and unlock all the additional content. Truly something for everyone

World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria (PC Game)

World of Warcraft (WoW) is the standard by which other MMOs are judged. But as it happens, I only just started playing MMOs, and I chose Guild Wars 2 (GW2) as my entrée. But WoW’s latest expansion, The Mists of Pandaria (Pandaria), was released today. With the help of Warcraft aficionado, Marco Lemos (who helped me with my article, “A ‘World of Warcraft’ Player Reviews ‘Guild Wars 2‘”), I spent some time giving the Pandaria beta a whirl, to see how it compares to my standard, GW2.

I can see the appeal of Pandaria. GW2’s lack of end-game material can give some players no sense of completion, and I can see where gameplay might feel repetitive after a few months. With multiple expansions and dungeons, Pandaria is, in the best possible sense of the phrase, a work in progress.

However, I ultimately prefer GW2. Here’s what Marco and I liked, and didn’t like, about Pandaria compared with GW2.

What I liked about Pandaria

- The starting level gameplay is incredibly simple—some would say too simple. But in Pandaria, it was much easier to learn how combat worked. GW2’s gives your character multiple abilities in the beginning, which were difficult to keep track of because I was too busy fleeing from centaurs. I learned quickly, but still, Pandaria is the better choice for beginners.

If I could rewind time, I would first buy Apple at $5 per share. And then I would have started my life as an MMO player with WoW. Only after that would I have moved on to GW2.

- The quest text and dialog are extremely well written, and they perfectly capture the right tone to motivate the player. Master Shang flattered me with, “Most of the other trainees have been here for quite some time, but you are able to match them even within this first hour.” These helpful prompts made me want to keep playing, and they really did give me a sense of attachment to my character—something that GW2 did not do.

- I was also more engaged with the plot. At one point, two of our companions fell out with each other over a turtle (<–vague spoiler), and their fight, though brief, made me feel like I was part of the story. The plot also moved along at a good pace.

- Raiding areas will have a staggered release date, starting today and going through November 6. This way, players can pace their gameplay. GW2, on the other hand, hasn’t breathed a single word about releasing new content.

Lemos, the more experienced MMO gamer, had this to say in favor of Pandaria:

- The monk class is well designed. Brewmaster tanking seems a lot of fun, with several amazing cooldowns (one that redirects 20% raid damage to the tank); mistweaver monks come out swinging with the ability to heal your whole group; and windwalker monks  finally get to use those sweet fist weapons, like the Claws of Gekkan.

As with the Druid and paladin, you can choose whether you want to play Alliance (lightside) or Horde (darkside).
